Orano announced March 31 that the Cominak mine in Niger has permanently shut after producing 75,000 metric tons of uranium over 40 years. "A new era is now commencing for the COMINAK mine to which Orano is providing its assistance to ensure a sustainable social, societal and environmental transition," Orano CEO Phillipe Knoche said in the March 31 statement. Cominak, or Compagnie Miniere d'Akouta, is owned by Orano (59%), Nigerien state-owned mining company Sopamin (31%) and Enusa (10%).
