Tests show high-burnup spent fuel integrity maintained in transport, storage

The results of testing summarized in a draft guidance document confirms NRC staff’s conclusion that the cladding integrity of highburnup spent fuel will not be compromised during transport or storage up to 60 years. NRC staff explained how they reached that conclusion in an August 22 presentation to an Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards subcommittee on draft Nureg-2224, a report issued for public comment in August 2018 that documents staff efforts to address a technical gap that has challenged the certification of storage and transportation casks for high burnup, or HBU, spent fuel for nearly two decades.
