COMEX gold and silver futures closed nhigher Monday, pulled in opposite direc-ntions by a downward revision in the ratings noutlook for US sovereign debt and currency nswings. Gold for June delivery settled n$6.90/oz higher at $1,492.90/oz, a new nsettlement high. Silver for May delivery ngained $0.385/oz to settle at $42.956/oz nafter hitting an intraday high of $43.560oz. Gold and silver headed lower in early nEuropean trading following news of another nincrease in Chinese bank reserves and a nrally in the US dollar on reports Greece nhad asked the EU and the IMF to restruc-nture its debt. But the dollar’s advance was nhalted by news that Standard & Poor’s low-nered the ratings outlook on US sovereign ndebt to negative from stable.
