Zambian copper union accepts labor deal at Luanshya

The Zambian mineworkers union has naccepted a 12% wage increase offer by the nLuanshya Copper Mine, a mine official said nFriday. The official, who spoke on condition nof anonymity, said negotiators from the nNational Union of Miners and Allied Workers nwere expected to brief members on the noffer ahead of a vote on it Saturday. The nofficial said management had rejected the nunions’ demands of 35%, later reduced to n25%. The copper mine, one of the two old-est in Zambia, is a unit of China Nonferrous nMetals Group. Luanshya produced 800,000 nmt of copper ore in 2010, 4.6% higher than nthe 765,000 mt target and is now targeting noutput of 1.2 million mt in 2011, deputy nCEO Robert Kamanga said January 18. nLuanshya’s copper grades range between n1.2% and 1.5%.
