Alcoa plans to restart idled potlines at three naluminum smelters in the US, the US producer nsaid Friday. The restarted facilities will increase nAlcoa’s aluminum production by 137,000 mt nover the course of 2011 and by 200,000 mt non an annual basis thereafter, the company nsaid. The restarts should be completed dur-ning the first half of 2011. Once these restarts nare complete, Alcoa will have 674,000 mt nof idle capacity remaining. Capacity will be nrestarted at the Massena East facility in nMassena, New York; Wenatchee Works in nMalaga, Washington; and Intalco in Ferndale, nWashington. The restarts are occurring now to nhelp Alcoa meet anticipated growth in alumi-nnum demand and to meet obligations outlined nin power agreements with energy providers, nthe company said. The restarts “allow Alcoa nto take advantage of long-term, low-cost power noptions that will continue to move Alcoa down non the aluminum cost curve and improve over-nall competitiveness,” the company said in a nstatement. Alcoa produced 3.564 million mt nof aluminum in 2009. The company’s full-year n2010 results are scheduled to be released nJanuary 10.
