The strike at South Africa’s national power gener-nator Eskom, threatened by more than 26,000nworkers, is off and the National Union ofnMineworkers says it hopes to sign a new wagendeal later this week. The NUM, along withnNUMSA and Solidarity, have been pressing for an15% pay rise plus a Rand 4,000/monthn($517/month) housing allowance. Eskom, whichnsupplies most of the power to South Africa’snmines, made an opening offer of 5.5% andnincreased it steadily to 8.5% last week. Over thenweekend, Eskom increased the offer to 9% plusna Rand 1,500/month housing allowance.
