Ma’aden, Alcoa break ground on Saudi Al JV

Saudi Arabian Mining Company Ma’adennand Alcoa have officially broken ground onntheir joint aluminium project at Ras aznZawr in Saudi Arabia, which is expected tonbecome the world’s largest fully integratednaluminium complex when completed, thencompanies said in a joint statement overnthe weekend. The project is also expectednto become the world’s lowest-cost suppliernof primary aluminium, alumina and aluminiumnproducts, with access to the growingnmarkets of the Middle East and beyond,nthe companies said. In its initial phase,nthe joint venture will develop a fully integratednindustrial complex, consisting of anbauxite mine at Al Ba’aitha and an aluminanrefinery, aluminum smelter and rolling millnon the Arabian Gulf coast at Ras Az Zawr.nBauxite feedstock for the planned aluminanrefinery will be transported by rail from thennew mine at Al Ba’aitha, near Quiba, in thennorth. The smelter and rolling mill are duento begin operations in 2013 with the minenand refinery coming onstream in 2014.
