KU,LG&E probed on impact of nine-city load loss

Kentucky Utilities, the largest electric utility in the Commonwealth, was ordered Thursday by state regulators to disclose how it plans to offset the loss of 325 MW of load in 2019 when nine cities stop buying wholesale power from the PPL Corp. subsidiary. The cities – Frankfort, the state capital; Barbourville, Bardwell, Berea, Corbin, Falmouth, Madisonville, Paris and Providence – announced plans to sever their contractual ties with KU several years ago after the Lexington-based KU made new contract demands at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission that would have raised wholesale rates and doubled the term of its contract commitments to 10 years.
