January MISO natural gas-fired generation jumps 45.4% year over year

Natural gas-fired generation across the Midcontinent Independent System Operator footprint jumped 45.4% year over year in January, but coal-fired generation remained the leading fuel source even though output rose just 2.2% year over year, according to grid operator data. Gas-fired generation averaged 446,038 MWh/day in January and accounted for 23% of the overall fuel mix in the ISO, which was up 5 percentage points year on year. However, MISO's leading fuel source in January remained coal-fired generation at 50% of the fuel mix, even as that share fell 5 percentage points year on year. Generation by coal units totaled 942,616 MWh/day in January, up 13% from December.
