New York investing $1.6B in upgrades to extend life of Niagara hydro project

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Sept. 22 a $1.6 billion investment to extend the life of the hydroelectric Niagara Power Project. The Climate Week announcement included the completion of a $460 million modernization effort at the New York Power Authority's 240-MW Lewiston Niagara power plant, and the digitization of the first of 13 hydropower turbines at the 2,435-MW Robert Moses Niagara plant. The completed digitization and modernization of the Niagara Power project is the first phase of a 15-year plan. An additional $1.1 billion will be spent modernizing the Niagara Power project, bringing the total cost to $1.6 billion, according to Hochul.
