MISO Power Tracker: Heat wave, high gas prices push prices higher on year

A heat wave combined with light wind output and high natural gas prices to push Midcontinent Independent System Operator wholesale power prices substantially higher this August compared with August 2020, and October power forwards followed gas higher, S&P Global Platts data shows. Day-ahead on-peak locational marginal prices averaged in a range from the mid-$40s/MWh to the mid-$50s/MWh at five power hubs scattered across the vast MISO footprint. Most of these were up from August 2020 prices by percentages ranging upward from about 69%, but MISO Texas Hub prices were virtually flat on the year.
