Consumers Energy bets on gas, renewables with accelerated coal exit by 2025

Michigan utility Consumers Energy Co. intends to eliminate coal-fired power generation from its electricity mix by 2025, accelerating its previously planned strategic shift away from coal by 15 years, the CMS Energy Corp. subsidiary said June 23. If approved by state regulators, Consumers would prematurely shutter three coal-fired units in 2025 at its Campbell generating station near Holland, Mich., totaling 1,440 MW. The utility also plans to move up by about eight years to 2023 the closure of Units 3 and 4 at the Karn facility, which generate more than 1,100 MW with natural gas and fuel oil.
