US DOE offers $52.5 mil in funding for 31 clean hydrogen projects

The US Department of Energy will provide $52.5 million to fund 31 projects designed to develop next-generation clean hydrogen technologies, underpinning the first part of the agency's previously announced Energy Earthshots initiative. The projects will address technical gaps in hydrogen production, storage, distribution and utilization technologies. The DOE said the projects could help support the decarbonization of the electricity sector by 2035, according to a July 7 news release. The projects will cover electrolysis, which is the process of producing hydrogen using electricity and water; clean hydrogen production; fuel cell subsystems and components; domestic hydrogen supply chain components and refueling technologies; reversible solid oxide cells technology; advanced carbon capture, utilization, and storage systems from different plants; and a gas turbine combustion system for 100% hydrogen, among other development areas, the DOE said.
