Ontario asks Hydro One to proceed with 230-kV transmission project

Ontario's Independent Electricity System Operator selected Hydro One Inc. to build a double-circuit 230-kV transmission line in the southwestern part of the province. As recommended by the grid operator, known as the IESO, in 2019, the Hydro One Ltd. subsidiary is developing the new infrastructure to increase the amount of available power in the region by approximately 400 MW. The IESO expects power demand in the Windsor-Essex and Chatham areas to grow from about 500 MW now to about 2,000 MW by 2035, primarily driven by greenhouses for indoor agriculture. If approved by the Ontario Energy Board, the new transmission line, running between the Lambton transmission station and the Chatham switching station, will be in service by 2028, Hydro One said in a March 29 news release. Studies by the IESO determined the transmission project to be the most cost-effective way to meet increasing power demand in the region.
