DOE publishes draft environmental impact statement for nuclear test reactor

The U.S. Department of Energy has published a draft environmental impact statement for the construction and operation of a "fastneutron- spectrum" versatile test reactor. The agency has determined that such a facility is needed "to enable testing and evaluating nuclear fuels, materials, sensors, and instrumentation for use in advanced reactors and other purposes." And according to the draft EIS, the DOE would prefer that the reactor be constructed at its Idaho National Laboratory research facility.
