Solar PV leads US power plant construction cost reductions: EIA

Annual capacity-weighted average construction costs for utility-scale solar photovoltaic systems, onshore wind turbines and natural gas-fired turbines have decreased from 2013 to 2018, with solar PV costs falling the most, the US Energy Information Administration said Sept. 16. “From 2013 to 2018, costs for solar fell 50%, costs for wind fell 27% and costs for natural gas fell 13%,” the EIA said in a research note. Those three generation technologies combined accounted for over 98% of total capacity added to the US electricity grid in 2018, and US power-generating capacity investment increased by 9.3% from 2017 to 2018, driven by natural gas capacity additions, the EIA said.
