Vistra Energy's 1,500 MW/6,000 MWh battery storage projects slated for its Moss Landing site in Monterey County, California, will be a major leap forward for battery storage in the US if all comes to fruition. However, depending on installed costs, the large project's economics "raise some concerns," said an S&P Global Platts Analytics report released Aug. 17. On Aug. 10, Monterey County planning officials granted Vistra Energy permission to expand a battery station at its Moss Landing CCGT power plant to 1,500 MW of four-hour energy storage. The project is to include four, 300 MW/1,200 MWh battery systems to be built in phases over a five year period. The first phase is 300 MW to be completed by the end of 2020, while a second phase of 100 MW is expected to be completed in 2021. These two phases are "underpinned" by resource adequacy contracts signed with Pacific Gas and Electric on May 19.
