German cities are pressing ahead with energy transition strategies that improve local air quality, with Hamburg recently awarding contracts for 530 electric buses while the Cologne region is putting Europe's largest hydrogen fuel cell bus fleet into operation. Hamburg's public transport operator Hochbahn awarded contracts in Europe's biggest e-bus tender to date to Daimler, MAN and Poland's Solaris, it said Aug. 18. Some 140 battery-powered buses are to be delivered in 2021 and 2022, with 60 units operational by end-2020 as part of a drive to replace some 1,000 diesel buses in the city by 2030.
