Curtailment Tracker: Cal-ISO renewable curtailments increase 20% year on year

California Independent System Operator renewable curtailments reached 255,330 MWh in May, a jump of 14% year on year but remained below the record level reached in April, according to ISO data. May curtailments decreased 20% from April, which reached a record of 318,444 MWh and surpassed the previous record of 223,195 MWh reached in May 2019, according to ISO data. However, year-todate curtailments have averaged 209,583 MWh, up 66% from the same period a year ago. Hourly curtailments in May increased from hours ending 7 through 11, and then started to decrease steadily through hour ending 20, according to S&P Global Platts assessments. In comparison, hourly curtailments during other months this year held steady or continued to increase throughout the afternoon hours before starting to decrease between hours ending 17 through 19. Daily solar curtailments slipped 28% month on month to average 3,612 MW in May, as wind curtailments increased 28% to average 53.46 MW, according to S&P Global Platts assessments. Renewable curtailments are expected to fall throughout the summer season as power demand increases with the temperatures and more generation is needed for cooling demand.
