Industry analysts differ regarding pace, strength of power market recovery

As the coronavirus pandemic weakens power demand across the US, electricity prices through 2021 likely will reflect current weak forward prices in most areas, a new S&P Global Platts Analytics report shows, drawing mixed reactions from industry analysts. “Raw loads across much of the US Lower 48 continued to reflect electricity demand hindered by the effects of novel coronavirus,” said Kieran Kemmerer, a Platts Analytics power mrket analyst. “Estimates for the Eastern Interconnect on aggregate show loads declined by roughly 10% year on year, while raw loads in [the Electric Reliability Council of Texas] and the Western Interconnect saw declines closer to 5% year on year. As such, on-peak prices set new multi-year lows in May across much of the US.”
