TVA monthly fuel cost decreasing to lowest December level in seven years

Wholesale fuel cost charged by the Tennessee Valley Authority next month will decrease to the lowest level seen for December since at least 2012, a TVA spokesperson said Monday. For the billing period beginning December 1, the total monthly fuel cost will be 1.747 cents/kWh, down less than 1% from November’s fuel cost, 1.758 cents/kWh. The month-on-month decrease is slightly unusual for December, TVA spokesperson Scott Brooks said, given that winter typically brings colder temperatures, increased demand and higher fuel prices. He said lower natural gas prices and a high hydropower forecast contributed to the lower fuel costs this year. The fuel cost for December 2019 is 14% lower than the three-year average for that month, Brooks said, and the lowest fuel cost seen for December since TVA changed its calculation in 2012.
