The future of the nuclear power industry in the US will not hinge onsmall modular reactors, according to Southern Company CEO TomFanning.Atlanta-headquartered Southern, which is building the US' only newutility-scale nuclear reactors at the Vogtle plant through subsidiaryGeorgia Power and its project partners, is "very interested" in smallmodular reactors (SMRs) and micro-nuclear reactors, Fanning said inan interview at the EEI Financial Conference in Orlando, Florida. Butwhile the US Department of Energy and energy companies areinvesting resources in exploring potential implementation on a largerscale, Fanning said there are other possibilities for the future of thenuclear power sector.
