Geothermal capacity down, but many still see promise

Installed geothermal power generation capacity in the US has fallen over the past four years, and fewer projects are in the pipeline now than in 2015, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence data, highlighting the difficulty of tapping into the abundant supply of heat trapped beneath the earth's surface. The US has 2,880 MW of geothermal power generation capacity, according to the data, and 1,742 MW in the pipeline. Those figures fall short of the levels reached in 2015, when the US had 2,999 MW of geothermal operating capacity and an additional 3,039 MW worth of planned capacity.
