PJM TRACKER: Power prices fall on lighter loads, weaker gas markets

PJM Interconnection daily power prices in May plunged an average of26% year on year on lower electricity demand, as forwards alsotrended weaker across the summer months, tracking their natural gascounterparts.PJM peakload averaged 91,763 MW in May, up 8% month on month,but a drop of 8.3% from a year ago, as Philadelphia had 76% morecooling-degree days in May than normal and 2.4% more than last year,according to US National Weather Service data. In contrast, Chicagohad 2% more heating-degree days in May than normal, and 40% lesscooling-degree days than normal.PJM West Hub saw the biggest price change year on year as theday-ahead on-peak locational marginal price averaged $28.64/MWh inMay, a drop of 32% year on year, as the real-time on-peak price fell36% year on year to average $28.08/MWh, according to PJM data.
