Trade groups say FCC proposal threatens grid reliability, heightens outage risks

In a significant show of force from the power and natural gasindustries, a coalition of major trade groups has filed commentsagainst a Federal Communications Commission proposal to open upa wireless communications band heavily used by utilities tounlicensed use.US airwaves known as spectrum are the invisible infrastructure needed for wireless services. A proposal by the FCC would allowunlicensed operations on the 6 GHz spectrum band, with interferenceto incumbent licensees mitigated through an automated frequencycoordination (AFC) system. The proposed rule is part of the FCC'sbroader objective to ensure there is adequate spectrum toaccommodate the proliferation of connected, wireless devices oftenreferred to as the internet of things.
