PJM generation retirements 137% higher than 2017

Generation retirements across the PJM Interconnection year to date are already 137% higher than all of 2017, with 580 MW more projected to be deactivated by the end of the year, according to grid operator data. PJM has retired nearly 4,940 MW of generation year to date, mostly in coal-fired generation, according to PJM data. Of that amount, 2,911 MW has been in coal generation, 42% more than in 2017. There has also been 1,106 MW of natural gas retired, in addition to the 607-MW Oyster Creek Nuclear Generation Station that closed this year. In comparison, there was a total of 2,083 MW of generation deactivated across PJM in 2017, including 2,049 MW of coal. More than 80% of the coal retirements so far this year came from Dayton Power and Light’s 1,737-MW Stuart plant and its 600-MW Killeen-2. In March 2017, the utility said “without significant changes in market conditions, the plants will not be economically viable beyond mid-2018.”
