NRC issues draft EIS for Holtec consolidated spent fuel storage facility

NRC staff released March 10 its draft environmental impact statementfor cask vendor Holtec International's application to build and operatein New Mexico a consolidated interim spent fuel storage facilityStaff concluded in the draft EIS that the environmental impacts ofthe project, from construction to decommissioning, would not besufficiently large to preclude issuing Holtec a license, the agency saidin a statement March 10.Holtec filed an application in March 2017 seeking NRC authorizationto initially store 5,000 mtU in 22,500 canisters for a 40-year period at afacility to be built and operated in Lea County, New Mexico.A 60-day public comment period will begin once the agencypublishes a Federal Register notice announcing the availability of thedraft report, NRC said in its statement. The agency said it is planningseveral public meetings in New Mexico during the comment period.
