The Energy Department began soliciting public comments last week on a $1-billion plan to clean up a huge stash of pluto-nium-tainted "transuranic" waste that is buried in old, rotting containers at the Idaho National Laboratory. DOE's plan entails digging up and removing waste from about 4.8 acres of the 97-acre landfill at INL. DOE wants to leave the rest of the waste in place, protected by a surface barrier and stabilized underground with concrete grout.
