US taps Shell-led group to develop liquid hydrogen storage tank for import, export terminals

A Shell-led group has been selected by the US Department of Energy to develop a large-scale liquid hydrogen storage tank for import and export terminals. The DOE awarded $6 million to the project, and those funds will be matched by Shell and storage tank builder CB&I Storage Solutions, each to contribute $3 million, for a total project fund of $12 million, the two companies said in an Oct. 13 statement. Other members of the consortium include the University of Houston, NASA’s Kennedy Space Center and GenH2, a liquid hydrogen infrastructure developer. The space center, which has the largest liquid hydrogen storage tanks in the world, will provide use of its cryogenics test laboratory and expertise.
