California Energy Commission adopts process to expedite battery storage projects

The California Energy Commission approved a third order to complywith Governor Gavin Newsom’s emergency proclamation to reducestrain on energy infrastructure and ensure more clean energy capacitydue to projected shortfalls of 3.5 GW in 2021 and 5 GW in summer 2022.The order, approved Sept. 8, establishes a process for expeditinglicenses for new or existing battery storage systems of 20 MW or morethat are capable of discharging for at least two hours and will be ableto deliver net peak energy by Oct. 31, 2022, said Shawn Pittard, deputydirector for the commission’s Siting, Transmission, and EnvironmentalProtection Division.
