Changing power market conditions complicate PJM capacity market demand curve update

PJM Interconnection stakeholders Aug. 17 worked with consultant Brattle Group on updated assumptions for calculating the net cost of new entry into the capacity market, along with other considerations as the power market adds more renewables and storage with fewer natural gas-fired resources. PJM conducts a periodic assessment of key parameters of the Variable Resource Requirement curve, which is an administratively determined representation of demand used to determine the level of capacity that should be procured in the grid operator’s three-year forward capacity auctions.
