Cybersecurity impacts from an influx of small-scale, distributed energy resources on the grid that could be spurred by a recent Federal Energy Regulatory Commission order have been under consideration for some time, but could still pose threats to critical infrastructure, grid experts said Sept. 23. FERC Sept. 17 approved an order (RM18-9) that opens wholesale power markets to aggregated DERs like small-scale solar arrays and battery installations. The long-awaited regulation, deemed Order 2222, requires regional transmission organizations and independent system operators to develop market rules that allow DER aggregators to bundle small-scale resources together and register those aggregations for wholesale market participation.
