Nebraska utility provides details on plan for gas plants to back up 600 MW solar

Nebraska municipal utility Omaha Public Power District has provided new details about up to 350 MW of natural-gas fired capacity it intends to install, to back up as much as 600 MW of planned solar additions by 2023. OPPD has touted its solar plans as the “largest renewable project of its kind in the Midwest.” OPPD has proposed installing 400 MW to 450 MW of gas-fired capacity at what utility spokesperson Jodi Baker called the Papillon site, southwest of Omaha, Neb. That facility, which would be adjacent to a county landfill on farmland in the Sarpy County town of Papillon, would “include two simple-cycle combustion turbines and supporting structures for generation, along with a substation for transmission,” according to a utility factsheet. Baker said OPPD has also proposed installing between 100 MW to 150 MW of natural gas-fired capacity at the “Omaha” site in Douglas County. That facility “would include six to nine reciprocating engines for generation, along with a substation for transmission,” according to a separate factsheet.
