The California Energy Commission on Tuesday gave the Marsh Landing Generating Station the green light to add batteries to its 760-MW gasfired facility so it can provide black start capability to restore regional electricity service after a widespread outage. The move is significant because it shows industry is moving forward with using battery technology to provide black start capability, which helps get the electric system and running without external aid from the grid. Black start capability is usually provided by units powered by coal, gas or hydro.
