Australia's Carbon Energy has announced its first commercial scale production of synthetic gas from its Underground Coal Gasification plant in the south east of Queensland. The company's plant at Bloodwood Creek in the Surat Basin coalfield converts coal to gas which is suitable for chemical feedstock production, the company said in a January 12 statement.rn"To date we have gasified upwards of 70 tonnes of coal per day and the quality of the gas produced continues to be at the top end of expectations," said Carbon Energy managing director Andrew Dash. The company plans to increase the quantity of coal gasified by its plant to around 150 tons a day in coming weeks. Upon completion of the commercial trial, Carbon Energy said it wants to develop "major world scale manufacturing facilities near its Surat Basin site."
