Appalachia threatened by mountaintop mining ban

US Republican Senator Lamar Alexander has reiterated his opposition to mountaintop coal mining and intends to push through a bill that he and Democratic Senator Ben Cardin of Maryland introduced last year. "We want to make sure that the bill reflects our goal, which is to end the practice of what's called mountaintop removal mining," Alexander, of Tennessee, said, adding that "our goal is not to end surface mining."
