At his three-hour long competence hearing before the European Parliament, Oettinger impressed MEPs with his grasp of technical details, but stuck closely to the Commission's official line. This includes the promotion of competitiveness, sustainability and security of supply - the three issues which have driven EU energy policy for the last five years. The only issue where Oettinger went even mildly off-piste was on the controversial issue of unbundling - separating transmission and distribution from supply - which dominated the debate on the Commission's third package of energy market opening laws adopted last year.
