Brazil to push RES share of energy mix

Renewable energy sources in Brazil would increase their share in the country's energy mix to 46.3% in 2020, up from 44.8% in 2010, according to the country's new Decennial Energy Plan, known as PDE 2020. Under the plan, the biggest projected increase in installed renewable energy capacity will take place in the wind sector, where capacity is expected to soar from 831 MW in December 2010 to 11.532 GW by 2020. This would mark a seven-fold increase in wind energy's share of total electricity generation from 1% to 7%.Biomass capacity is expected to double from about 4.5 GW in December 2010 to 9.163 GW in December 2020, while small hydroelectric capacity would grow from 3.8 GW to 6.447 GW by the end of the decade. Over the 10-year period, renewable energy generation capacity would rise 12% per year on average, with wind, biomass and small hydropower leading the pack. Brazil's Southeast/Central West region will spearhead the drive for renewable energy sources in the decade ahead. The decennial energy plans serve as instruments of energy-sector planning in Brazil and as important guides for decision-makers.
