Unstable Yemen at crossroads

The fate of Yemen, formerly split along north-south lines and the poorest country on the Arabian Peninsula, is at a crossroads with generals and politicians resigning their positions and joining a growing anti-government protest to demand the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh. In addition to popular unrest, the government faces the triple threats of rebellion in the north, secession in the south and al-Qaida militancy, making the country more vulnerable than its wealthier neighbors to destabilization.
