Nuclear crisis, unrest forces rapid EU response

The nuclear crisis in Japan and the political unrest in North Africa and the Middle East have sent EU politicians scrambling to reassure the public that they are responding rapidly and appropriately to ensure safe and secure energy supplies. Just two weeks after the March 11 earthquake and tsunami which left Japan struggling to prevent a meltdown at its Fukushima nuclear plant, EU leaders backed plans hatched by the European Commission, national government experts and nuclear regulators to carry out voluntary safety "stress tests" on the EU's 143 nuclear power plants.
