Integrating renewables into energy systems is creating multiple opportunities for new technologies, but those opportunities can prove alarmingly fleeting. Renewables disrupt both established technologies and emergent ones, providing an investment landscape akin to quicksand. Nowhere is this more evident than in the interplay between solar, wind, storage and traditional thermal generation.
