Chinese energy security in the pipeline

The oil and gas pipelines under construction from Myanmar to China are critical to Chinese energy security, but are still only one element in a wider strategy. Reducing its dependence on transits through the Malacca Straits and South China Sea may embolden Chinese territorial claims. Beijing's interest in the South China Sea remains undiminished and its policies in the region potentially incendiary.
