In November, engineering company Alstom completed the installation of its new-generation offshore wind turbine, the 6 MW Haliade 150, off Ostend harbor at the Belwind site in Belgium. This, the company said, is the largest offshore wind turbine ever installed in sea waters. It is, in terms of blade length, but 6 MW turbines have already been installed elsewhere, and Alstom is unlikely to hold its blade length claim for long. Scotland is home to the Methil Offshore Wind Farm demonstration site, where Samsung Heavy Industries have deployed a single 7 MW machine. The project is well advanced, and was expected to start producing power by end-2013. It is located 50 meters offshore. At 196 meters from sea to blade tip, it is the tallest turbine in the world, with a blade length of 85 meters.
