Coal India rationalizes underground mines

India's state-run Coal India Limited is aiming to produce 52 million mt of coal from underground mines by fiscal year 2019-20 (April-March), the coal minister said in February. The number of underground mines is falling, owing to their conversion to opencast mines by deploying high capacity heavy earth moving machinery equipment, the exhaustion of reserves in existing mines, safety reasons and economic non-viability, coal minister Piyush Goyal told parliament.
