Borehole drilling has started for whatrnwill be England’s largest domesticrndistrict ground source heat pumprnsystem, supplying heat and hotrnwater to 400 flats over eight towerrnblocks in the London Borough ofrnEnfield. The project builds on thernsuccess of an earlier project, ExeterrnRoad, which was the first installationrnof ground source heating to high risernblocks in the country.rnThese projects are a significant steprnforward in the challenging task ofrnretrofitting energy efficiencyrntechnologies in the existing housingrnstock. Buildings make up betweenrn30-40% of final energy consumption,rnwith a correspondingly large carbonrnfootprint, and, while it is relatively easyrnto set higher energy efficiencyrnstandards for new buildings, the costrnof retrofitting older buildings is high,rninvolving upfront capital costs in returnrnfor savings over a long payback period.
