Figures vary, but about 55% of all Nigerians lack any access toelectricity. Privatization has changed the face of the industry,but the problems are as big as ever. There is insufficientgeneration plant and a huge mismatch in terms of generatingand distribution capacity, forcing most Nigerians to eithercope without electricity or produce their own.The scale of the challenge is matched only by the ambition ofprevious, failed government targets, including a goal set in2010 that Nigeria should have more than 20 GW of mainlygas-fired generating capacity by 2020. Today it still strugglesto operate above 4 GW for a population of 186 million.
