Fishers mount hydro protest

Switzerland's fishermen are mounting a campaign to stop further exploitation of the nation's waterways, which they say is a major threat to the remaining fish population. Fishing associations claim that between 30% and 99% of fish moving down river - depending on the location - are killed by turbines. They point out that in canton Bern alone 92 applications for federal subsidies under the full-cost feed-in tariffs for renewables system (KEV) have been accepted. There are at least 400 projects for small hydropower stations on Swiss waterways, 90% of which are already being used for energy production.
