The UK's Department of Energy and Climate Change is to cut solar PV feed-in tariffs for sub-4 kW domestic units from 43.3p/kWh to 21p/kWh, it said October 31. Rates for units up to 250-kW are also to be cut, while the FiT for schemes over 250 kW would remain at 8.5p/kWh, having been reduced from 29.3p/kWh in August. "The justification for the reduction in tariffs is a 30% reduction in installation costs since the scheme was introduced about 18 months ago and by as much as 70% since 2008," DECC said. Left untouched, solar PV rates would cost UK consumers £980 million/yr by 2014/15, DECC said. The new rates would contain costs at £250-280 million/yr. Reduced tariffs are set to apply to new installations from April 1, 2012.
