EDP shortlist down to four

Portugal has shortlisted four bidders - Germany's E.ON, China's Three Gorges Corporation and Electrobras and Cemig of Brazil - to buy up to 21.35% of Energias de Portugal, the country's dominant power utility. The decision is understood to have eliminated the Indian conglomerate Birla and Japan's Marubeni Europower from an initial group of six companies that submitted non-binding bids. Following an initial discussion period, the four shortlisted groups will now be requested to submit binding offers for the state's last remaining stake in EDP. No deadline has been set for these bids, but the government has said it hopes to complete the sale by the end of the year.
