New life for Bremen coal unit

Modernization of SWB's Industriehafen coal unit 6 in Bremen was given the green light November 4 by the utility and its parent EWE. Work will begin in 2013 and take about 12 months. The unit's lifetime will then be extended to 2025, SWB told Platts. The work involves improvements to the turbine and steam cycle to raise efficiency by 2.5%, resulting in a 22 MW increase in capacity to 300 MW. Controls will also be modernized to increase operational flexibility. The 140 MW unit 5 at the site, commissioned in 1968, is held in cold reserve and is rarely used, SWB said. Total coal use of both units in 2009 amounted to 953,000 tonnes.
